About Logos…

What is a logo?
A logo is a unique graphic that visually differentiates your company, product or service. A good logo reinforces a positive impression with customers, prospects and business partners. This is achieved by meeting two important criteria: style and function.

Logo Style
The style of the logo should be relevant to your industry and stand out as unique to your business. A good logo will appear professional, refined and creative. Your whole company is visually summed up in one simple piece of art so it is critical to get it right.

Logo Function
Longetivity: It should look good over a long period of time. Trendy styles tend to become outdated quickly. Size: A logo should look good at 1 inch or 10 feet. A graphic that is too fine or complex will not resize to look good on an envelope or embroidered on a shirt. Color: A logo can have many colors but it should always look good in only one color.

The 3 Types of Logos:

1. Iconic Logos
These type of logos are either abstract or literal representations of the company or product name. They are designed to be quickly recognizable and communicate the tone of what they are representing.

2. Text Logos
Typographical logos are literally the name expressed as a graphic. They can also quickly set the tone from feelings of playful to sophisticated depending on the style and arrangement of the text. Custom or modified lettering is common to create a unique logo.

3. Mixed Logos
These logos contain both text and graphic elements. They are used to more clearly define the product or company name. Text may be integrated into the art or be placed near it depending on the style or objective.

Considerations
Theme: A logo subtly influences designs it is featured on such as packaging and advertising materials. Your logo and designs should be consistent for a professional look. Color: Just as the logo is identifiable so are the color schemes used in the logo and throughout any designed materials. Having these defined early on increases recognition. Clipart: Avoid it in a logo if you are seeking credibility. You will not be able to trademark it and may even find other businesses with your logo!

Legal

Once the design is completed you may want to apply for a trademark. This typically costs a few hundred dollars and gives evidence of ownership to the holder. Visit the official Patent and Trademark website for answers to common questions.

Summary
Consumers are unconsciously aware of design quality and assign a certain degree of credibility to companies and products with well-designed logos. Having a single experienced designer handle all of your design projects from the start ensures a consistent and well thought out design theme for your product or business.
